Low Budget Films Find Larger Market

Vesuvio Entertainment Executive Producer Greg Sims, right
People often turn to entertainment in tough economic times and, as a result, Hollywood has been seen as recession-proof. But, major studios are struggling to make a profit and some are closing production units. One independent producer says the market has opened up for low budget films. "Behind Your Eyes" is a psychological thriller - soon to be released. It"s a low-budget production that, with clever marketing, could earn a good profit. Vesuvio Entertainment, a small independent company, produced the film. Executive Producer Greg Sims says good low-budget films are finding a growing market. "Now, people are saying it"s a little bit of a sexier business as you"re seeing the whole business model change and these bigger movies do not really work so well anymore, with a few exceptions," he said. The exceptions are studio blockbusters like Avatar, the science fiction fantasy. It has earned over $2.5 billion worldwide. But it cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make, and few producers can finance that kind of film these days.
Sims uses up-and-coming actors, thrills and action, like in his 1990 film, "Red Surf." The film starred a young George Clooney and rock star Gene Simmons. The producer says it became a cult classic and a money-maker. "Clooney with "Red Surf" was really an action film with these guys that go out on wet bikes," Sims said. "They"re illegally running drugs. They get into big boat fights, lots of explosions. We did that film for, I think, at the time $1.2 million." Horror is another genre that can be done on an even lower budget. In 1997, Sims branched out into romance with the film, "Touch Me." He says new digital technology helps cut the cost. "So what you"re seeing is people who are making a $1.5 million [or] $2 million movies are having trouble recouping those budgets now, and you"re seeing a whole slew of movies being made for $100,000, $200,000, a quarter of a million," he said. He says the key is good production and marketing, and keeping track of trends in distribution. "My job is to be nimble and to respond to changes in the marketplace, which are happening every hour, as opposed to every year," Sims said. With films like "Behind Your Eyes," he says he can make a profit through DVD sales, digital downloads and international distribution.

Haiti"s electoral council recently ruled August 19 that Hip-Hop singer Wyclef Jean cannot run for president of the Caribbean nation. Jean was among 15 of 35 candidates for the office who were ruled ineligible by the council, which offered no explanation for the decision. An unnamed council official told Reuters that Haiti"s electoral council ruled that Jean"s candidacy did not meet several legal requirements. One could be Haiti"s law that requires candidates to live in the country for five consecutive years. Jean lived in Haiti until he was nine years old, when he moved to New Jersey. Although Jean frequently visits Haiti, the country"s constitution requires a candidate to be a resident for five years. In 2005, he formed his Yele Haiti Foundation, which provides scholarships to Haitian children and humanitarian aid to his native country. Brown Gets Positive Progress Report from Judge
Patricia Schnegg, the Los Angeles judge overseeing Chris Brown"s probation told the R&B singer that "You"re doing very well" at a August 26 hearing on Brown"s progress. Brown was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community labor last year after being found guilty of assaulting then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna. Jay-Z Tops Forbes" Hip-Hop Cash Kings List
Forbes magazine recently issued its annual "Hip-Hop Cash Kings" list. Jay-Z tops the list by earning $63 million during the past year. Rounding out the Top 5 money makers are Sean "Diddy" Combs ($30 million), Akon ($21 million), Lil Wayne ($20 million) and Dr. Dre ($17 million). Steven Tyler Will Be New Judge on "American Idol"
Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton told a New Jersey newspaper that the group"s lead singer, Steven Tyler, will be a judge on the upcoming 10th season of American Idol. The Star-Ledger quoted Hamilton as saying, "The ink is dry on that. Steven is someone who lives to be in front of an audience, and the people closest to him know how witty and entertaining he can be. I don"t know if American Idol will be rock "n" roll enough for him, but it is an opportunity for millions of people to see another side of Steven Tyler." American Idol producers haven"t confirmed who will replace former judges Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi. Brooks & Dunn Wrap Up Concert Tour
On September 2, Brooks & Dunn will wrap up their "Last Rodeo Tour" with a charity concert in Nashville. "Brooks & Dunn and Friends" will benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The Museum"s director Kyle Young says, "The enormity of this gesture, including the endorsement it implies and the example it sets, is something the Museum"s board and staff will contemplate with gratitude for a very long time. We are grateful to Kix (Brooks) and Ronnie (Dunn) for supporting our educational mission and for putting the museum on the radar screen of their nation of fans. The only word for them is magnificent!" Ricky Martin to Publish Memoir November 2

"Mad Men," "Modern Family" Big Winners at Emmy Awards

"Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner, holds best drama series award, left and director Ryan Murphy holds best comedy series director award for "Glee" backstage during 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards 29 Aug. 2010, in Los Angeles. Robert Morris, rear, from "Mad Men" cast kisses a trophy.
U.S. television honored its best programs Sunday at the annual Emmy awards in Los Angeles. Mad Men was named best dramatic series. Modern Family was named best comedy. Key Emmys also went to television movies and a mini-series based on real-life stories.
Mad Men, which is set at a 1960s New York advertising firm, won its third consecutive Emmy as best drama series. And a satirical look at the modern American family, Modern Family was named best comedy and earned Emmys for its writing and for supporting actor Eric Stonestreet.
The musical-comedy series Glee had 19 nominations heading into the awards, but the series won just two Emmys, for supporting actress Jane Lynch and series creator and director Ryan Murphy. Bryan Cranston was honored for his portrayal of a drug dealer in the series Breaking Bad and Kyra Sedgewick for her role as a deputy police chief in The Closer. Top comic acting honors went to Edie Falco of Nurse Jackie and Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory, a series about nerdy scientists. Temple Grandin, a TV film about a noted animal scientist who has struggled with autism, was named best television movie, and earned an acting award for Claire Danes, who portrays Grandin. Supporting performers Julia Ormond and David Strathairn and director Mick Jackson also earned Emmys.
Autism is a developmental disorder that causes problems in communicating with others, but Grandin has overcome her disability to become a respected author and advocate for the humane treatment of livestock. Producer Emily Gerson Saines, who is herself the mother of an autistic child, thanked Grandin for her work in spreading knowledge about the condition. "Autism has reached epidemic proportions, so on behalf of all the parents like myself who have a child with autism, Temple Grandin, you are our hero," Saines said. The Pacific, a 10-part miniseries from producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, was named best miniseries. The project cost more than $200 million, and it tells the intertwined stories of American Marines fighting in the Pacific during World War II. Hanks thanked his Australia-based crew, who worked under harsh conditions.
"And our magnificent cast of actors who themselves went through an old brand of hell across the Pacific in order to portray the stories of an entire generation of men and women who did the same," Hanks said. Al Pacino was honored for his role in You Don"t Know Jack, a television film about the controversial doctor and assisted-suicide supporter Jack Kevorkian. The former physician, now 82, was in the audience. George Clooney received a humanitarian award for his efforts on behalf of victims of disasters. Clooney brought attention to the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan and helped organize telethons to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Haitian earthquake this year. He complained that the spotlight on those disasters, and the recent flooding in Pakistan, holds the world"s attention only briefly.
"So here"s hoping that some very bright person right here in the room or at home watching can help find a way to keep the spotlight burning on these heart-breaking situations that continue to be heart-breaking long after the cameras go away," Clooney said. The Emmys are presented by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and are considered the highest honor in American television. Late-night talk show host and comic Jimmy Fallon hosted this year"s show.

London, Aug 27 – Pop star Lady GaGa has blasted her old schoolmate Paris Hilton, insisting she doesn’t see the hotel heiress as an artist.
The star, 24, went to New York’s Convent Of The Sacred Heart as a child along with heiresses Paris, 29, and Nicky Hilton, 26.
However, she said they are very different despite going to the same school.
“I don’t see Paris as an artist,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.
“People assume that all the girls who went to my school were like Nicky and Paris and the truth is that I went to a very, very religious school.
“Some girls were very artistic, some did drugs and didn’t give a f***. It was like any other high school. Except we had nuns.
“I was the smart, studious theatre and music student.
“I didn’t hang out with all the popular blonde girls. I wasn’t blonde really until I was 20 years old,” she added. (ANI)

London, Aug 27 – Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock is set to reveal all about her cheating ex-husband in a TV interview.
The star will be interviewed on NBC’s morning show next Tuesday, reports the Daily Express.
‘The Blind Side’ actress was left stunned by revelations earlier this year about her hubby Jesse James’s affair with tattooed model Michelle McGee.
The claims came just a week after the 46-year-old scooped her Best Actress Oscar.
She has remained shut on the relation but is now set to follow in the footsteps of Elin Nordegren, who this week opened about her golfer ex-husband Tiger Woods’ s infidelities. (ANI)

London, Aug 27 – Sir Sean Connery has vowed never to act again after falling ill on the eve of his 80th birthday.
He has earlier spoken of the retirement but was lured back into films with the animated movie ‘Sir Billi’ earlier this year.
The star celebrated his b’day on Wednesday with wife Micheline and 15 of his close family at his Bahamas home.
Sir Sean said last October he had a heart condition and now says his health problems have made him re-evaluate his priorities.
“I don’t think I’ll ever act again. I have so many wonderful memories but those days are over,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.
However, he added his health is improving.
“I’m swimming every day and I’m even trying to get the golf swing working again but that might take a little bit longer,” he said.
“During the summer I wasn’t feeling great. I came to the Edinburgh Film Festival in June then, when I left for the south of France, I realised I had lost a bit of weight and needed to change my regime. The past few days have been pretty special with the family here. It has been a great celebration,” he added. (ANI)

August 27, 2010: Ankita Srivastava who was lately seen in ‘Do Saheliyaan’ (Zee TV), is now days getting back to her first love, Theatres. As known that Ankita is a theatre person who has molded herself into a passionate actor and now after the show was pulled off by the channel, she has turned herself back to theatres with out getting redundant.
“I have once again started my work in theatres from where I have come. Because instead of sitting at home waiting for the proper offers; I spend my time working for the plays. I have just started with readings for my play and had not started the acting part of it because I worry, if in between I get some good offers, I won’t be able to continue with the theatres. But till then as acting is my life, I can’t put it on the back seat,” says Ankita.
So for what offers are you are waiting for? “ I don’t know, but some where in my heart it feels that I should get a good channel like Zee and if I get some offer from the low channel, I won’t be ready to take up that venture. Let’s see what comes my way. But till then, I will keep enjoying with my first love,” answers Ankita.
Hope producers are listening to her call!

August 27, 2010: Actor Michael Douglas says his “saggy ass” stopped him from making another Basic Instinct movie.
The 65-year-old ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps ’ star — who’s married to actress Catherine Zeta Jones — says he stayed well away from the critically panned Basic Instinct 2 because he didn’t feel confident back in the raunchy role.
“The first one was great and Sharon Stone was fantastic but who would want to see my saggy ass?” he said.
“I just didn’t feel like doing another. The first one was a tough one to do and we pulled it off so god bless them but I didn’t go near the sequel.”
Michael recently insisted he’ll never live up to the greatness of his father Kirk Douglas.
“I don’t think of myself as a legend,” he said last month. “My father is a legend. I’ll never match him on that score.
I just love the fact that whatever I do I still get to share with him at the age of 93.”
Douglas will next be seen in Oliver Stone’s ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ that releases in India on September 24th.

"You can"t pay for the exposure we"ve got," says Danny Merk, who owns the store where the cast worked in season one. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Ignacio Guzman
Snooki
Photo: MTV
In addition to keeping local law enforcement busy (really busy), the stars of MTV"s "Jersey Shore" have also made an impact of a different sort on the town of Seaside Heights, New Jersey: an economic one.
Seems business is booming on the boardwalk, especially now that the show is back in town to tape its third season. Seaside Heights Business Improvement District executive director Maria Maruca probably summed it up best when she told MTV News earlier this year that "we can"t even calculate the economic benefit" the show brings to the community.
"There"s the curiosity factor," she said. "Celebrities draw crowds. That"s going to give us an edge that we didn"t have before. The exposure that the show brought to Seaside Heights — when every late-night host is talking about Snooki, when Leonardo DiCaprio is talking about the show — we could never have afforded that type of media. This is more than we could ever have asked for."
So, determined to find out just how Snooki and company have helped out local businesses, we trekked out to the boardwalk and asked owners of some of Seaside"s best-known shops — some of which have already been featured prominently on the show.
" "Jersey Shore" has helped Seaside Heights [in] both winter and summer. We get people coming in here every day looking for the cast," said Michael Carbone, owner of the Beachcomber Bar and Grill (the same place where Snooki was hit last season). "You go down by the house, there"s a hundred people standing outside, every day. Business is up, the town is up. People come here for the "Jersey Shore." "
The Beachcomber benefits doubly, as it has a catering contract with MTV and, according to an NBC News report, serves thousands of meals for the 130 crew members who work on the "Shore."
"It"s helped everybody. Businesses in town, the motel owners, even the crew that makes the show have been patrons of my bar every night," Carbone said. "We are hoping the show runs for years and years to come. ... It"s a big craze, and it"s doing very well for everybody."
Those sentiments are echoed by Danny Merk, who owns the Shore Store, where the cast of the show (sorta) worked during season one.
"It"s been busy in here all the time now. It"s great that I own a gift shop ... people wanna buy little souvenirs. T-shirts. Little things, and this is the place to be at," he said. "But it"s helped all the business on the boardwalk, because you can"t just shop at one store. ... You can"t pay for the exposure we"ve got.
"It came out of nowhere, [and] all of a sudden the kids came down here. They worked like average kids during the day, went out to the clubs at night," he continued. "Now, it"s just nonstop. Everyone wants to see what they are doing. What did they do, what places they went to. They want to be like them. A lot of people just worship them."
Even though his store wasn"t featured on the show, Mike Rariden"s Adrenaline Body Piercing and Tattoo shop has definitely reaped the benefits of the toned (and tatted) "Jersey Shore" kids — even if he can"t seem to comprehend just why.
" "Jersey Shore" has definitely brought a lot more people out than it has been in previous years. Everybody is trying to get in on the action, get on the show, meet the cast and crew," he said. "They"ve definitely increased business a lot. ... [There"s] a big population of younger kids that all look at Snooki as their hero. I don"t know why, but, hey."
Don"t miss "Jersey Shore" every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

"He"s working on some amazing material," Swizzy says on MTV"s "RapFix Live." By Mawuse Ziegbe
Swizz Beatz
Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News
Super-producer Swizz Beatz has been keeping super busy in the studio these days.
Swizzy has jumped on Kanye West"s all-star "Power" remix and has been updating his Twitter followers about his recent late-night sessions with everyone from N.E.R.D. to Mary J. Blige. During his Thursday (August 26) interview on "RapFix Live," the rapper/producer revealed that he"s also been in the lab with 50 Cent.
"I met up with him earlier in the day," Swizz explained about slotting studio time with Fif, Mary and Busta Rhymes on Wednesday. "He"s working on some amazing material that we"re possibly collaborating on." For the most part, Swizz kept the details of his collabo with 50 on the low: "I don"t want to talk too soon or too early, but it"s crazy."
50 has been going back and forth about the direction of his next album after reportedly scrapping plans to work in some dance rhythms on his Black Magic LP. Swizzy, who hit the studio with 50 to craft material for the Queens MC"s 2007 album Curtis, said the only advice he has for Fif is to maintain a winner"s attitude.
"Triumphant. That"s it. Everything just would have to be triumphant," Swizzy advised. But the producer said he"s encouraging all the stars he works with, including the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, to unleash a crazy amount of swagger in the booth.
"That"s my approach on every artist I"m working with right now. Even with Mary, you"re gonna be able to hear this week, probably Friday, her sound that"s triumphant," Swizz said. "For me to have that blueprint and to want to be able to share it with everybody that"s of talent, it"s like, "Wow, this is what I get to do for work?" It"s fun."
What do you think an upcoming Swizz Beatz and 50 Cent collabo would sound like? Sound off in the comments below!

Actress blasts paparazzi in her return to Twitter. By Mawuse Ziegbe
Lindsay Lohan
Photo: Dave McNew/ Getty Images
After a fairly rough summer, Lindsay Lohan is getting back into the swing of things. The actress, who left rehab Tuesday after spending 23 days in court-ordered treatment, has returned to Twitter. In her first tweet as a free woman, Lohan targeted some familiar foes: paparazzi.
"Clearly.. Paparazzi shouldn"t be allowed to take pictures or video while someone"s driving or at a stop light. 4every1"s sake #trafficpolice," the starlet tweeted Thursday (August 26).
Just like her constantly changing hair color and shenanigans behind the wheel, Lohan"s run-ins with photogs have marked her years in an unrelenting spotlight. A car crash that Lohan claimed was the fault of an overzealous snapper partly inspired a California law aimed at cracking down on eager paparazzi.
In her return to the social-networking site, Lohan appears to have revisited her tradition of oversharing and antagonizing others via the Web. The actress" turbulent relationship with ex-girlfriend Samantha Ronson played out in front of millions of viral fans, with both ladies typing swipes at each other. More recently, bawdy comedienne Joan Rivers went after Lohan on Twitter before the actress began her stint in jail. Lohan has also blasted her publicity-hungry father, Michael, on the site as well.
Even if Lohan has taken up her viral antics once again, many have hope the actress can bounce back from her recent troubles.
"I feel like people in the film industry are rooting for her," film critic Ryan Gilbey recently told MTV News. "[Director Quentin] Tarantino has been saying great, supportive things about her and how brilliant she"s in this movie he"s produced ["Machete"]."
Indeed, her "Machete" co-stars have been beaming about Lohan"s performance in the flick.
"I wish her all the best. I mean, she"s a talented young actress," Cheech Marin told MTV News at the film"s premiere. "Hopefully, she won"t let her personal life overwhelm her professional life. ... At some point, you gotta be responsible."
"She"s so good in this movie," Jessica Alba added of "Machete." "I can"t wait for people to see [her in] it."
Are you happy Lindsay Lohan is tweeting again? Let us know in the comments below!

"There are things you will never see," he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner
James Cameron
Photo: MTV News
The re-release of the biggest movie in history is just one day away! For the fans who haven"t decided whether to make the trek to theaters to see the nine extra minutes James Cameron and crew added to "Avatar," we have some news about the impending release of the film"s DVD and Blu-ray editions straight from the source.
When MTV News caught up with Cameron recently to discuss the film"s re-release, we asked if fans will ever get to see everything via bonus features, extended cuts, etc.
"There are things you will never see," Cameron admitted. "But there"s a whole lot of stuff that will definitely satisfy the appetite of even the most hard-core fan in a big box-set DVD that we"re actually preparing right now."
In addition to preparing the film for the re-release, Cameron said his team is also prepping the special-edition DVD and Blu-ray versions. "It"s all happening at the same time, because the deadline for mass-producing stuff for the Christmas marketplace is pretty much now anyway," he said. "The re-release that we"re doing now with the nine additional minutes is carefully architected for the theatrical experience. But we have more extended-play versions of the film or an extended version of the film that will be available in the Blu-ray, and there will be a whole bunch of supplemental stuff with about 45 minutes of deleted material."
Cameron explained that the reason fans won"t ever get all of "Avatar" comes down to money. "We got the budget to finish this nine minutes, and we got the budget to finish the 16-minute longer version [the special extended edition], and then beyond that, it didn"t make sense to finish all the extra CG and digital effects."
Will you go see the re-release of "Avatar" for the nine extra minutes or wait for the DVD and Blu-ray versions? Let us know in the comments!
Check out everything we"ve got on "Avatar."

Newlywed producer says he"s connected to Keys "spiritually," on "RapFix Live." By Mawuse Ziegbe
Alicia Keys marries Swizz Beatz on the Mediterranean Sea July 31
Photo: Stephanie Pistel
Swizz Beatz became part of one of the most high-profile musical duos after tying the knot with superstar songstress Alicia Keys this summer. And although the couple have dozens of hit records, millions of album sales, tons of awards and gobs of respect from fans and fellow artists under their respective belts, Swizzy said their outsize star power doesn"t factor into their relationship. When it comes to Alicia, Swizz keeps it all about love.
"It"s a blessing," Swizz told MTV News" Sway about finding his match during his "RapFix Live" interview on Thursday (August 26). "I don"t look at it as from a superstar basis. I look at my relationship with my wife as a union that"s just connected ... spiritually. I"m not into the names and the superstars and this and that. I"ve been around that my whole life. It means nothing to me. It"s just about great people."
Swizz, who got hitched about a month ago and is expecting a child with his new wife, also described falling in love with Keys. The superproducer didn"t point to a specific moment in their relationship that pushed him head over heels but said, simply, that he just began to sense a certain head-spinning emotion for Keys.
"It"s just a feeling," Swizzy said. "Love is a word that"s powerful but the feeling is even stronger."
Even with the charmed, jet-setting lifestyle Swizz has been able to experience for years, the rapper/producer said his connection with Keys has enhanced his life.
"To identify that feeling is something that"s amazing because it doesn"t only come from your partner. It comes from your love for music, your love for people, your love for a lot of things, and I think that once you identify the feeling of love, you"ll be a better person," Swizz explained. "I"m a better man. I think that having love in your life, it just has that effect. Because then you spread love. You can"t enjoy love without spreading love. I just think that it all falls in the pocket."
What do you think about Swizz"s comments on love and his wife, Alicia Keys? Let us know in the comments!

Atlanta MC is also joined by Robin Thicke and Janelle Monáe for the showcase, which premieres September 1 on MTV.com. By Jayson Rodriguez
B.o.B performs on "Unplugged"
Photo: MTV
B.o.B has worked his sorcery once again, scoring a third-straight top 10 hit with his latest single, "Magic," which entered Billboard"s Hot 100 this week. The song, featuring Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo, is from B.o.B"s debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, and follows "Nothin" on You" and "Airplanes" as breakout hits for the upstart artist.
The 2010 Video Music Awards nominee and performer broke out "Magic" during his recent "MTV Unplugged" showcase, which premieres September 1 on MTV.com. His performance of "Magic," during which he sings the chorus in place of Cuomo, will also be in video rotation on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Hits and MTV Jams after the premiere.
The Atlanta MC is the latest in a series of artists to headline the "Unplugged" series; other alumni include Eric Clapton, Nirvana, Jodeci, Alicia Keys and, in April, Trey Songz.
In addition to "Magic," Bobby Ray also performed "Letters From Vietnam," "Airplanes" (with Melanie Fiona taking over for Hayley Williams), "Nothin" on You" (Robin Thicke filled in for Bruno Mars), "The Kids" (featuring Janelle Monáe) and a cover of MGMT"s "Kids."
B.o.B and Justin Bieber were announced as the latest VMA performers last week, joining Kanye West, Drake and Usher on the Los Angeles stage. B.o.B is also nominated for five Moonmen, including Video of the Year and Best Male Video.
"It"s very special to me. I think it"s a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I"ve put in over the years and the word of mouth I"ve helped create," B.o.B told MTV News about his nominations. "It"s definitely amazing. I"m trying to find the words to explain it, but I can"t. It"s inexplicable. I"m a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude."
Don"t miss B.o.B"s "MTV Unplugged," premiering September 1 on MTV.com.

Singer is doing "a good job," according to Los Angeles judge who presided over his latest court appearance. By Jayson Rodriguez
Chris Brown
Photo: Jed Jacobsohn/ Getty Images
Chris Brown once again scored a positive review from a Los Angeles judge as he attended his fourth status hearing on Thursday afternoon (August 26) stemming from his probation for attacking former flame Rihanna in February 2009.
Brown, sporting a white dress shirt and black vest, arrived to the courtroom with his attorney Mark Geragos shortly before 1:45 p.m. PT. The pair went before Judge Patricia Schnegg, who told Brown he was doing "a good job," according to The Associated Press. Judge Schnegg said she received positive reports from both Brown"s domestic-violence counselors and his probation officers in Virginia, where he"s completing his punishment.
Under the terms of Brown"s probation, the singer is on the hook for 180 days of community labor and he was ordered to attend domestic-violence counseling for up to one year. He was also issued a stay-away order by the judge that bars him from communicating or associating with Rihanna.
During his last hearing, the judge confirmed that Brown had completed 290 hours of labor, which represent roughly 20 percent of his required total. His counseling sessions are scheduled to end next month. Brown is due back in court on November 18.
Since his last hearing, his career and reputation have been on the upswing. The singer wowed audiences at this year"s BET Awards with a stirring Michael Jackson tribute performance. Brown sang the late singer"s "Man in the Mirror," breaking down in tears as he stumbled over the redemptive lyrics.
His independent release, Fan of a Fan, with Lil Wayne protégé Tyga, has spawned the breakout hit "Deuces," which is currently sitting at #2 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
What do you think of Chris" progress in the last year? Tell us in the comments.

On "RapFix Live," Swizz recounted the epic meeting of the super-producer minds. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway
Swizz Beatz
Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News
It was a picture worth a thousand tweets: multi-platinum producers Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Swizz Beatz all working together in one studio. The image was snapped by Clinton Sparks and posted on his Twitter earlier this month.
During MTV News" "RapFix Live" on Thursday (August 26), Swizz explained that the trio were booked in the same studio — Swizz to work with N.E.R.D., and Kanye to work on Swizzy"s forthcoming solo effort.
By the end of the night, though, they all converged and had a "real down-to-earth conversation; I think hip-hop needs more of that," Swizz recalled.
"It"s really confidential, I"m not even gonna front," Swizz said about what went down that night. "I don"t want to be the person to let all the news out. I got to save some stories in case "Ye or P wanna elaborate on that. But just know that it was epic, and it was amazing to see such forces in the room, humbled but honest at the same time, comparing notes, comparing music."
The Ruff Ryders alum said the three producers are very "serious" when they discuss and critique each other"s work. But the respect level is so high that no one takes the suggestions personally, Swizz said. And he hopes that the "positive, competitive energy" they have together results in the best possible music.
"If someone is saying "no" to something or "It"s not right," the reason why is gonna come, and then the debate," Swizz said of the process. "And you make the decision after that."
Are you looking forward to hearing music from the three super-producers? Let us know in the comments!

"We all root for each other," she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner
Nikki Reed
Photo: MTV News
Ever since the first "Twilight" film was released — kicking off the phenomenon that has included record-breaking box-office numbers, fainting fans, megawatt premieres, etc. — the suddenly superstar cast has been catapulted into a spotlight none of them saw coming. As such, the actors are very much in demand and currently working on a number of projects.
When Nikki Reed stopped by MTV News recently to discuss her film "Last Day of Summer," we asked her which of her co-stars" upcoming films she"s most excited to see.
"All of them," she said. "I love Taylor [Lautner] so much, and I"m so proud of him and what he"s doing. He"s making a great movie in Pittsburgh right now," she said, referring to the John Singleton-directed action thriller "Abduction."
"I"m excited about Rob [Pattinson]"s movie "Water for Elephants," " she added. "I think he"s going to be phenomenal in that, and Kristen [Stewart] is doing an amazing film ["On the Road"]. Elizabeth Reaser just did a movie called "Homework" with Michael Angarano, who"s a really good friend of mine, and Emma Roberts that I"m excited about."
Reed and her co-stars have so many projects going that she was hard-pressed to remember everyone"s work schedule. "We all root for each other," she said.
Speaking of which, the multi-talented and multi-tasking actress, who recently directed Sage"s music video for "Edie Sedgwick," lit up at our question about whether she would consider directing a music video for her co-star Jackson Rathbone"s band, 100 Monkeys.
"Would I ever! Jackson and I are on the phone every other day, because we"re trying to find a movie to do together. I forgot to mention him — his band is skyrocketing. It"s amazing," she gushed. "I would be honored. I don"t want to take the position: "Would I ever." If he would ever let me, yeah. I love them."

Director Roman White dishes on what fans can expect from the clip, which premieres Friday on MTV.com. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias
Taylor Swift in her music video for "Mine"
Photo: Big Machine Records
With fans eagerly anticipating the premiere of Taylor Swift"s "Mine" video, director Roman White — who also worked with Swift on the VMA-winning "You Belong With Me" and her VMA-nominated clip for "Fifteen" — said their latest collabo shows a more grown-up side to the singer.
" "Mine" was a very hard song," he said about the track, which will be featured on Swift"s October 25 release Speak Now. "The song has a lot of dark elements, but it also has a lot of happy elements. Taylor was extremely involved with this one from the beginning. We had lots of conversations about what it should be and moments and things like that."
The video was shot early this summer, and White and Swift worked to make sure they"d capture the ups and downs of the video"s love affair between Swift and "Black Swan" actor Toby Hemingway.
"We shot the video in early July in Maine, and it was insanely hot. The first day we shot at this private estate. They had a private beach and everything, which made shooting a lot easier, because when you go out in public and somebody spots Taylor Swift, I mean, it doesn"t take 15 minutes and there"s a huge crowd," he recalled about the video shoot.
"The beach shot we shot was mostly her and Toby falling in love," he explained. "It was more kind of walking hand in hand along the coastline, and then later on in the video, we kind of mimic that same beach. But it"s Toby and older Taylor, and older Taylor has shorter hair. That"s pretty much it."
The video will also feature the pair getting engaged and married. It"s quite different from the high school-themed video White previously shot with her. "Taylor"s definitely matured since I"ve known her," he said. "We started with "You Belong With Me," and now we just shot a video where she has kids, and so that"s quite an evolution. I definitely think she"s growing into herself. It"s going to sound cheesy, but she"s becoming a woman."
"Mine" premieres Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET on MTV.com, VH1.com and CMT.com.

Rolling Stones" Keith Richards will also speak about his memoir, "Life," this fall. By Mawuse Ziegbe
Jay-Z and Keith Richards
Photo: Getty Images
Jay-Z is releasing his memoir "Decoded" this fall, but the superstar lyricist will have to keep things quiet during one of his upcoming public appearances. The Brooklyn MC is slated to speak at the New York Public Library on November 15.
Jigga will chat about "Decoded" as part of the "Live From the NYPL" fall series, which also features literary stars such as Toni Morrison and Zadie Smith. The library appears to be down with making some noise next season, as Jay-Z isn"t the only musical artist hitting the library: Rolling Stones rocker Keith Richards will also dish about his upcoming tome, "Life," on October 29.
"We"re very excited to reveal to the public a different side of their personality — the literary side!" a rep for the library told MTV News.
"Decoded," which is scheduled to hit shelves the same month as his library appearance, is a memoir punched up by insightful explorations of Jay"s hard-hitting rhymes. The book was penned in collaboration with journalist Dream Hampton and delves into his steady rise from pushing product on the streets of Brooklyn to stacking hits as one of the most revered lyricists in the game.
The publication of "Decoded" will cap a long period in which the MC"s autobiography remained in literary limbo. Hov and Hampton had initially begun work on "The Black Book" in 2003, which was set to be released in 2004 via a deal with MTV Books/ Pocket Books. Hov pulled the plug on the project in 2005.
In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Jigga admitted that "Decoded," which is now being published by Speigel & Grau, has been completed for years. The MC revealed that his hesitance to release the project stemmed from the personal nature of the subject matter, much of which Hov was confronting for the first time.
"It"s too much. For the book, I was interviewed, people close to me were interviewed. So I was learning a lot of things I didn"t know as a child," Jay-Z said. "It"s not anything I haven"t said in the past, in songs. It"s just more detailed. A song is three minutes long. A book doesn"t have to rhyme, and it has no time limit, so you can say exactly how everything went."
What do you think Jay-Z will discuss in his upcoming memoir? Let us know in the comments below!

Jessica Alba goes with "genius and amazing" director Robert Rodriguez, along with co-star Michelle Rodriguez. By Kara Warner

Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images
Those familiar with the trailer for Robert Rodriguez"s new film "Machete" — which started out as a fake preview in "Grindhouse" and eventually inspired the full-length feature — know to expect high-octane action sequences, blood and, thanks to Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez, badass babes.
Wednesday night"s special screening of the anticipated "Mexploitation" flick kept up with the high-octane and badass aspects, as Rodriguez and his cast arrived in pimped-out low-riders to the Orpheum Theatre in downtown L.A. Given the rebellious and revolutionary nature of Machete the character, and his trajectory in the film, we asked the stars who they would choose as an ally in a revolution.
Don Johnson went with a founding father and a famous rebel. "I like George Washington," Johnson said. "He did a good job. Fidel [Castro], he did a good job." Johnson also singled out Machete himself, Danny Trejo. "He"s good with a knife," he said. "Weird huh?"
Trejo went a different route: with his leading ladies. "Jessica Alba or Michelle Rodriguez," he said, highlighting the ladies" feisty fighting skills. "In this movie, they"re both badasses. They"re both bad-gorgeous-asses."
Alba also picked a leading lady as her ally. "Michelle [Rodriguez]!" she said. "[Michelle"s character in the movie] and Robert Rodriguez," she added, as her director joined in the interview. "Because he"s a genius and he"s amazing." (Alba also revealed that Rodriguez is an amazing cook, which enhances his ally appeal.)
"I"d have to say Danny [Trejo]," Rodriguez said. "You know why? Because he"s got loyalty in his eyes. He looks like the kind of guy that will take survival seriously, protection seriously, love seriously."
Cheech Marin agreed: "Danny Trejo, man, he"s the baddest. He"s great in this movie."
There you have it. Choice revolution ally: Danny Trejo. Who would you want to be by your side in a revolution? Leave your ideas in the comments!

Comedian is out after eight seasons on the sketch-comedy show, Forte"s rep confirms. By Mawuse Ziegbe
Will Forte performs in "The Falconer" skit on "Saturday Night Live"
Photo: Dana Edelson/ NBC
Will Forte is leaving his gig as a "Saturday Night Live" castmember after bringing the laughs for eight seasons on NBC"s late-night sketch-comedy show. The comedian"s rep confirmed Forte"s exit to MTV News.
"After eight great seasons, Will has made the decision to move on from SNL to pursue new opportunities," his rep said in a statement. "He is eternally grateful to [executive producer] Lorne [Michaels] and all of the incredible people he worked with over the years."
Forte has played a host of characters throughout his "SNL" career and is perhaps best known for his bumbling action star MacGruber, a thinly veiled send-up of the "80s action TV character MacGyver who came up with ingenious ways to slip out of sticky situations. A movie version of the popular sketch hit theaters in May and Forte told MTV News that he wasn"t sweating any pressure to live up to "SNL" sketch-turned-silver-screen smashes like "The Blues Brothers" or "Wayne"s World."
"The "SNL" track record is about the same as the movies-in-general track record," Forte said. "There are a lot of crappy movies out there and a lot of great movies. Sure, there has been some "SNL"-based movies that have sucked; there have been some great ones."
While Forte built upon the winning formula of MacGruber, he also said he wasn"t concerned with slavishly replicating the minutes-long sketch on the big screen. Instead, the former television producer and writer, who honed his comedic chops behind the scenes on shows such as "3rd Rock From the Sun," was more focused on creating a hilarious experience for theatergoers.
"We weren"t worried about the "SNL" aspect of the movie," Forte said. "We just tried to make the best movie we could."
What are some of your favorite memories of Will Forte on "SNL"? Let us know in the comments below!

"Prizon Pou K.E.P.A." goes back and forth between English and Creole. By Gil Kaufman
Wyclef Jean (file)
Photo: PictureGroup
Wyclef Jean is protesting his exclusion from the upcoming presidential election in Haiti the only way he knows how: by releasing a song.
The former Fugees leader posted a new track called "Prizon Pou K.E.P.A." (which translates into "Prison for the CEP") on Wednesday, in which he compares the rigorous scrutiny he faced to a child receiving a failing report card. The title is a pointed reference to the Haitian election commission, CEP, which ruled that he was not eligible to run for office in his birth nation.
"I am contesting, I am going to the court, I am contesting/ I don"t agree, I am contesting, I am going to the court, I am contesting," Wyclef sings. "Look, they gave Wyclef a report card/ They say Wyclef, you don"t speak Creole/ You are the Diaspora"s candidate."
Over a subtle, skittering beat and gently picked acoustic guitar, "Clef, 40, sings about his disappointment in the ruling in the island"s native language of Creole.
"Even my own Haitians curse me out on Facebook when they hear I want to be president," he says before calling out former bandmate Pras for the Fugees member"s negative reaction to Wyclef"s attempts. "Even my friends say to give Wyclef a report card/ Even the Catholic priests are surprised, they told me to leave Tigoav, come to Les Cayes/ All weekend I was celebrating Our Lady [Notre Dame]."
His tone is sedate and conversational for most of the tune, but at just past the two-minute mark, he breaks into a Bob Marley-like wail, during which his vocals take on a pained, urgent quaver.
The decision to pour out his heart in Creole in the nearly four-minute song is a pointed bid to speak directly to the Haitian people, as well as a possible winking rebuke to actor Sean Penn, who wrote a stinging column for the Huffington Post this week questioning "Clef"s motives in his failed presidential bid, as well as his fluency in the island nation"s two main languages: French and Creole.
Jean has pointed words for the nation"s current president as well, René Préval, chiding him, "Some militants say it"s a deal that I made with Préval/ I didn"t make a deal with Préval/ It"s [the] president who asked to see a candidate/ I could not refuse/ I said that I was going back to La Serre/ When I arrived, he offered me coffee/ He wanted to assure my friendship/ He said: "You are a good candidate"/ He put me on the phone with [presidential candidate] Jude Celestin/ We had a very good convo/ After that, Préval f---ing gave me a report card."
He blasts the president, saying he voted for him in 2006 and that it was Préval, not the electoral council, that put a roadblock in "Clef"s path to the presidency.
"It"s not Wyclef you gave a report card, it"s the youth that you gave a report card," he sings. "It"s not Wyclef you gave a report card, it"s the population that you gave a report card/ It"s not Wyclef you gave a report card, it"s the guy that sells [Haitian sweets] "dous makos" that you gave a report card/ It"s not Wyclef you gave a report card, it"s the countrymen that you gave a report card/ Look, they gave Wyclef a report card."
But he saves his harshest words for the electoral council, bringing some of the brimstone of his minister father by saying the CEP is "headed by Lucifer."
In the end, he says, he"s just sad for the youth, who he urges to support his cause and promises not to give up.
"My sweetheart is Haiti, do not break her heart/ Before I got to sleep, I always read a psalm, asking Hosanna to take the people out from under the rubbles/ And send angel Gabriel to protect the women under the tents that they are raping/ Wyclef Jean, truthfully, I will continue on contesting the electoral council/ We have to mobilize/ I won"t give up."
[Editor"s note: Thanks to Karlito"s blog for the Creole translation.]
What do you think of Wyclef"s musical response? Let us know in the comments.

Madame Tussauds asks "little monsters" to suggest their favorite outfits for upcoming replicas. By Gil Kaufman
Lady Gaga
Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Images
Lady Gaga"s whole existence sometimes feels like a living, breathing, bleeding, gender-bending work of art. Now, Madame Tussauds is planning to spend major bucks to turn the international pop sensation into a life-size waxwork.
According to a spokesperson for the New York branch of Madame Tussauds, the popular tourist attraction in Times Square is working on a Gaga figure that should be ready by year"s end. And here"s the best part:
"We"re open to hearing from fans about which looks they want," said the spokesperson, encouraging Gaga"s "little monsters" to visit NYCWax.com to weigh in on which of Gaga"s many signature styles they would like to see immortalized in wax. While the spokesperson could not comment on a report in a British tabloid that Tussauds is spending more than $1.5 million on the Gaga figures, they did clarify that "many" but not all nine global outlets will get their own Gaga. It is also not yet known if all the Gagas will sport the same look or have different outfits.
The museum is legendary for making wax replicas of the rich and famous, from President Obama and Justin Timberlake to Marilyn Monroe, Brad Pitt, Derek Jeter, former "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell, Madonna and Beyoncé.
The singer, who is up for a record 13 Moonmen at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards, gave Tussauds yet another possibility this week when she set aside female things and posed as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, for the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan. The magazine, which hits newsstands September 5, features a cover shot of Gaga as Calderone with an Elvis pompadour, white shirt and black trousers.
Which of Gaga"s looks do you think Tussauds should immortalize in wax? Leave your comments below!

Does the just-premiered clip rank in our list of top-five LP videos? By James Montgomery
Linkin Park"s "Breaking the Habit"
Photo: Warner Bros.
At 12:01 a.m. on Thursday (August 26), Linkin Park premiered their brand-new video for "The Catalyst," the first single off their upcoming A Thousand Suns album. It"s a dark, moody, abstract affair, full of swirling smoke, charred earth and rising tides, and, judging from the comments we got on MTVNews.com, Linkin Park fans totally love it. So that got us thinking: Is it good enough to rank among their all-time best videos?
Even though "The Catalyst" is barely 13 hours old at this point, it"s clear the clip takes the band to places they"ve never gone before. But the short answer is ... no, not just yet. Sure, the video would probably land in the LP top 10, but we"re talking about the best of the best here. So while it"s undoubtedly good, it"s not quite good enough to crack the band"s top five. But give it some time. We"re sure its impact will be measured in weeks and months, not hours. That"s how Linkin Park videos tend to go. At least, judging by the ones we"ve selected as their five best:
#5: "Somewhere I Belong"
The greatest Linkin Park videos also tend to be the biggest, and while "Somewhere I Belong" is definitely massive — the burning bed, the creeping, long-legged mammoths, the mech-like archway the band performs beneath — it"s the minimal touches that make it one of their all-time best. Joseph Hahn deftly uses macro focus to take us deep inside Chester Bennington"s subconscious, and from there, he fills the void with items taken from his bedroom: the Dalí-esque painting on the wall, the Gundam figures on the dresser, etc. The end result is a stirring, powerful piece — one that matches the punch of the song — proof that sometimes the smallest things also pack the biggest wallop.
#4: "Faint"
Sort of a left-field choice (it"s by no means one of their best-known clips), "Faint" is little more than a live clip ... and while Linkin Park have made more than their fair share of those, none can match the live-wire energy and emotional outpouring on display here. In a genius move, director Mark Romanek puts his cameras behind the band, which not only gives the viewer a new perspective on LP"s stage show, but somehow makes the explosion of angst and aggression all the more palpable. The closest thing we can find to capturing the band"s thunderous live performances.
#3: "Crawling"
A video that tackles heady themes (abuse, suicide, judgment and despair, to name just a few), "Crawling" goes deep — into the mind, behind the mirror, into a rapidly crumbling world — and somehow manages to come out the other side. It never feels heavy-handed, rather, the Brothers Strause were smart enough to harness the cathartic power of the song"s chorus, and set the main character"s road to redemption against it. Powerful stuff, with a happy ending.
#2: "Breaking the Habit"
Animated by the legendary Kazuto Nakazawa, "Breaking the Habit" is based around a simple story: the suicide of an unknown man in some foreboding future city. But as things progress, the story becomes increasingly complex ... a ghost haunts the skyscrapers, a girl slowly bleeds, a man struggles with his demons. And at clip"s end, we learn that it was Bennington who leapt to his death. All the while, you"re marveling at the unraveling narrative — and the dazzling animation too. Dramatic, doomy, filled with dread: It"s the kind of thing that most bands only aspire to make. Linkin Park pull it off with style to spare.
#1: "What I"ve Done"
The biggest, baddest and best Linkin Park video of all time, "What I"ve Done" is full of wide-screen visuals (the band performs in a barren desert, surrounded by walls of speakers and lighting rigs, mountains peaking on the horizon), but it"s hardly a summer blockbuster. Rather, Hahn was smart — or brave — enough to inject a message here: the destructive power of man versus the unyielding beauty of nature, and where it all will undoubtedly end (hint: we lose).
It also marks Linkin Park"s first time wading into political waters, as Hahn filled the video with images of the collapsing Twin Towers, a Katrina-ravaged New Orleans and oil-soaked wildlife. A shot of a starved African man is intercut with an engorged American eating a cheeseburger. An atomic bomb is detonated, followed by time-lapse footage of blades of grass peaking through the soil. "We are living in the end times," the band seems to be saying. "Repent while you still can." Not exactly the most uplifting of messages, but certainly the most vital.
What"s your favorite Linkin Park video of all time? Does "The Catalyst" rank in your top five? Tell us in the comments!

Tip delivers his hits, performs poignant tracks live for the first time during show set to air in December. By Shaheem Reid
T.I. on "VH1 Storytellers"
Photo: VH1
The words are still as meaningful and penetrating as they were in 2001. T.I. took the stage on Tuesday night at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City and led the audience back to album number one, track 2.
"They sendin" letters home from school, nobody read mines," Tip rapped from "Still Ain"t Forgave Myself." "And plus, my uncle"s doin" 10 years F.E.D. time/ Then I started rebellin", began crack sellin" / The littlest thang on the corner with a Mac 11 / After school, I hear my mama holla homework / I say, "aiiiight ma," but look, I got my own work / Started interacting with fiends at the age of 13 / Now my mama findin" rocks in my socks, glocks in my toy box."
Onstage to tape his episode of "VH1 Storytellers: T.I," the Atlanta MC delivered what was arguably his most intimate performance ever. (The show airs Friday, December 10 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on VH1.)
"I never performed [that song] since it was recorded," Tip told the crowd of track, a standout from his 2001 debut, I"m Serious. The King of the South said it just felt "too personal" to perform before.
"It took years to find the proper stage and proper crowd to present it to you guys," he explained. "Now I think the time is right. Glad to be presenting it to you."
Tip also said that although he would be performing what his fans saw as songs, hits even, for him it was altogether different. "To me, this is my life, my story," he said. "I"ve lived these things, endured these circumstances."
He went on to reveal the backstory for another early record that he hadn"t performed live until that night. "I Still Luv You," Tip explained, was inspired by the mother of his two sons, with whom he started a family as a teenager. The daughter he had by another woman and whom he had kept secret from his family for a while, as well as his relationship with his father also inspired the song, he revealed.
"Motivation," from T.I."s 2004 Urban Legend, was written in jail. Tip said that stint behind bars was a result of some criminals wrongly implicating him in a crime. As the police searched his house, they found a gun.
"Who would have thought?" he joked. Tip said that the gun was registered to someone else, and he wound up going to jail for a short time. "Oddly enough for me," he laughed. The record itself was inspired by "a rapper who used my dark moment as his bright moment. ... It didn"t rub me the right way."
Tip gave us plenty of bright moments, too, during the taping, with performances, in particular, of the smashes "Live Your Life" and "Bring Em Out."
What songs do most want to hear T.I. perform live? Share with us in the comments!

Experts point to her personality and online following for massive success of first two singles. By Kyle Anderson

Katy Perry"s just-released album Teenage Dream already has two gigantic hit singles in "California Gurls" and "Teenage Dream" and is well on its way to debuting at the top of the Billboard albums chart. With all those accomplishments already on her résumé, it"s safe to say Perry has beaten the dreaded sophomore slump.
The landscape of popular music is littered with one-and-done artists who aren"t able to parlay the success of a debut into a second effort. Consider the likes of Ashanti or James Blunt, both of whom had chart-topping hits and then struggled to keep it going the second time around. Neither Jessica Simpson nor Mandy Moore managed to come anywhere close to the heights of their first releases, and there are too many boy bands in this predicament to count.
But Perry is part of a new wave of pop stars who have managed to overcome the sophomore slump and do it with aplomb. Perry joins Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift among the many other names who have taken their second releases to even greater heights than their chart-busting debuts. What are they doing that other people aren"t?
Expectations tend to torpedo second albums before they get a chance to prove themselves, and it"s possible that the latest batch of pop stars have managed to sidestep those. "Gaga was an unknown who steadily built her way up through the dance charts, Perry had already been dropped from several labels when she released her debut, and Bieber was just a cute little underage nugget with a bunch of YouTube page views," Entertainment Weekly"s Leah Greenblatt explained. "I think in all three cases, their first albums were made without huge expectations." She suggests that there is no one clear way to avoid the sophomore slump, though the artists above do certainly have something in common. "All three have a pretty massive presence online," she said. "Their respective Twitters are these very vital, personalized hubs for their fans to stay connected throughout the recording and touring process and even their downtime. I think it really invests fans in a way that wasn"t really possible even a year or two ago."
Social networking certainly keeps you connected to your audience, though according to Melissa Maerz (who writes for Rolling Stone, Spin and Wired), all that is pretty useless unless the artist actually has a personality to show off. Luckily, that"s not a problem, especially for Perry and Gaga. "The second record is always tough for artists, because they"re more well-known than they were on their debut, but that also means there"s more pressure for them to succeed by taking new risks musically," she said. "But Lady Gaga and Katy Perry have already found a formula that works, and it"s not so much about the music as it is about the big personality. Katy Perry could probably continue to break every one of her songs down to syllables ("Cal-i-for-nia Girls!" "Teen-age Dream!") and no one would care, as long as she"s out there shooting whipped cream out her bra."
In fact, it may just be a sign of the times. "I think that has more to do with the time we live in, rather than the stars themselves," MTV News Rock Editor James Montgomery said. "Singles and ringtones drive the industry now, so it"s a lot easier to avoid putting out a confounding second album. All you have to do is release a few singles, and you"re on your way. It"s easier to convince someone to pay 99 cents for a track rather than $14.99 for an album. So, really, the deck is stacked in the pop star"s favor these days."
All three of our experts hit on a key bottom line: If the songs are good, people will be interested. The secret is that simple, and yet so many artists get caught up making the "confounding second album." "The old saying goes, "You have your entire life to make your first album," so you get to tinker away at it, in obscurity, for as long as you want. It is very much your project," Montgomery noted. "Thanks to the success of the first album, you"ve got an ego now. So you believe in your own brilliance, you stop listening to good advice, you shoot for the stars. And all of those things are bad, especially when it comes to pop music, because they lead you to make terrible decisions. Your second album may be your favorite one, but more than likely, it"s not anyone else"s."
Who are some of your favorite artists who have fallen victim to the sophomore slump? Let us know in the comments!

Singer will perform — and is up for three Moonmen — at the big show, airing live Sunday, September 12. By Jocelyn Vena
Usher at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards
Photo: Alberto Tamargo/Getty Images
Usher will certainly have fans saying "OMG" when he hits the stage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, but it isn"t the first time he"s had VMA viewers shouting his lyrics.
The R&B superstar got his first taste of what it was like to perform at the VMAs in Los Angeles in 1998 when he played the pre-show, taking the stage in a leather, graffiti-print jacket and leather tuxedo pants. Usher"s performance back then was incredibly low-fi, having only a few dancers behind him dressed like the ones in his "My Way" clip, which was nominated for a VMA that year.
In 2002, when the show was at Radio City Music Hall in New York, Usher hit the stage with Busta Rhymes and Pharrell to give Diddy some backup during his performance: a medley of "Bad Boy for Life," "I Need a Girl (Part I & II)" and "Pass the Courvoisier." Although his appearance was short and sweet, it featured him dancing quite a bit.
Two years later in 2004, when the show took the party down to Miami, the performance was all about Usher. Rain poured from the rafters as Usher offered fans his "Confessions" and took off his shirt before turning up the volume and the party vibe for "Yeah!" Ludacris and Lil Jon were also on hand, and Usher pulled off a Michael Jackson-inspired dance break and some high-flying antics.
Usher is up for three Moonmen at this year"s show, including noms for Best Male Video, Best Dance Music Video and Best Choreography for his "OMG" clip.
"It is an honor to once again be a part of the MTV Video Music Awards," Usher said in a statement. "I can"t wait to perform for my fans all around the world who have helped to make this album a success and my being here possible. You never know what"s gonna happen on an MTV VMA stage. ... I look forward to making it a night to remember."
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.

Filled With Comedy ‘Lottery Ticket’ Portrays Poverty and Desperation

BOW WOW as Kevin Carson and LORETTA DEVINE as Grandma in Alcon
Entertainment’s comedy “LOTTERY TICKET,” a Warner Bros.
In a new "urban comedy" film, young rap star Bow Wow plays an inner city teenager who wins a huge lotto jackpot and then has to deal with both the up and down sides of becoming an instant millionaire. Here"s a look at Lottery Ticket.
"I want you to play my numbers for me on the way home …and don"t let anybody copy them either, all right, because those are my numbers. I dreamt them up last night and they"re right out of the Holy Scripture here." "Okay."
Teenager Kevin is probably the only person in the Atlanta public housing project not excited about the lottery jackpot that has climbed to $370 million. Kevin has other things on his mind: keeping his job at a shopping mall shoe store, pipe dreaming about starting his own business and trying to get a date with the neighborhood"s prettiest girl. But his grandmother wants a ticket, so he waits in the long line to buy it:
"How many tickets do you need, man? What do you have?"
"I just need one, all right? Here, play those numbers for me." As an afterthought, he buys one more ticket for himself (using numbers from the slip of paper in the fortune cookie from his Chinese restaurant lunch); and, don"t you know it, against all odds his ticket is the sole winner:
"You got all six numbers!"
"Yes! We won!"
"I"ve got to call somebody."
"No! Nobody can know about this, all right?" Kevin worries that if word gets out, everyone will want a share of the good fortune. The trouble is it"s a holiday weekend and when he and his best friend go to the state lottery office they find it closed:
"Closed!?"
"Closed …for the Fourth of July. We open again Tuesday at 9AM."
"Tuesday? That"s three whole days. Do you know how much can happen in three whole days?" Sure enough, word about his winning ticket spreads like wildfire and Kevin spends the weekend fending off opportunists and criminals alike, while also learning who his true friends are: It is definitely a crazy story coming from nothing and then all of a sudden you have all of this money and all of this power and everybody wants a piece.
Shad Gregory Moss, better known by his stage name "Bow Wow," became famous as "Lil Bow Wow" with his first rap album at age 13 (10 years ago) and says he could identify with his character Kevin"s dilemma: "People turn on you. You have trust issues. You don"t know who to trust or what to believe any more. It"s definitely real. We see it every day," Lil Bow Wow says. "We see kids come from the inner cities who go to school for one year and then they sign these $80-$90 million (pro sports) contracts. These are things that are actually going on: a young kid coming from the "hood making it and now he"s in this whole other position. It is real."
"You know what, you don"t even have to go to design school. You could start your own shoe company."
"Yeah, I guess I could."
"That is all you"ve been talking about since you were nine years old. This is it, Kevin."
Naturi Naughton co-stars as Stacey, Kevin"s lifelong friend, who reminds him that money can"t buy love and trust, but it can let him do positive things: "Her character really wants to emphasize him doing something with that money. It"s not just about giving it to friends, it"s about giving it to the entire community so we can come up out of the projects and do something with our lives and feel inspired by someone taking the time to give back to the community," Naughton says. "I think Stacey cares more about that then about just getting a piece of the money." The cast also features Ice Cube as a neighborhood hermit who becomes Kevin"s protector. The rapper and actor is also producer of Lottery Ticket, a change of pace from the broad comedies he usually stars in: "In my music everything is pretty hard-core, talking about all the things that trouble me or trouble us; but in the movies, people pay their hard-earned money and they want to go be entertained and want to get a lift. We have moments in there and say the things that need to be said sometimes, but ultimately people have fun and to me that"s what movies are all about."
Veteran music video director Erik White makes his feature film debut with Lottery Ticket and says he wanted comic episodes to surround, but not drown out the film"s "learning moments". "It"s not a full-on comedy," White explains. "It"s more of a great story with funny stuff in it, which makes it a little bit different from the typical "urban" film. I really wanted to get across a story with some moral fiber to it, to give people something to think about when they leave the theater. That was one thing that always bothered me about some urban films: when you walk away you"re not left with anything to ponder. I think this concept was something that works with that."
"If you won the lottery, what would you do?"
"Me? You know, take care of my family, travel, and finish school …all that good stuff; but if I had your kind of money, I"d give back. Give people something to live for instead just living, you know?" Lottery Ticket was filmed on location in an Atlanta, Georgia public housing neighborhood with a cast of comedy and rap music stars including T-Pain, Brandon T. Jackson, Terry Crews, Bill Bellamy, Mike Epps and Loretta Devine.

Criminal Case Against Pop Star for HIV Transmission Stirs Debate
Selah Hennessy

Nadja Benaissa, singer of German girl band "No Angels", sits in a courtroom in Darmstadt, Germany, 16 Aug 2010
A pop star on trial in Germany is facing charges of grievous bodily harm. The crime she is accused of is infecting a man with HIV when she knew she was carrying the virus. The criminalization of HIV transmission has been widespread across Europe and North America for decades and new laws are emerging across Africa. But many people say the laws are not helping to limit the spread of HIV. Nadja Benaissa was 16 and pregnant when she found out she was HIV-positive. She went on to become a member of one of Germany"s most famous girl bands, No Angels. Benaissa, now 28 years old, is on trial in Germany facing criminal charges for sleeping with men without protection when she knew she was carrying the virus. Her story has hit the headlines across Europe and has brought to the public eye an issue that raises a number of questions about the value of criminalizing HIV transmission. Neil Cobb is a criminal law specialist at Britain"s Durham University. He says public opinion on the whole favors criminal laws. He says Western populations see it as a moral imperative to punish people who expose or transmit HIV to other. But in Africa, he says, the laws are seen as key to stopping the spread of HIV. "In most cases, criminalization has been seen as a way in which to prevent onward transmission," said Cobb. "I think that is particularly because of the lack of easy access to treatment for HIV that actually it"s been seen as a way to deal with the problem." But many people who work to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS - including the prestigious United Nations group UNAIDS - say the laws are counterproductive. Christine Stegling, senior advisor on HIV/AIDS at the International HIV Alliance, says the laws do not prevent onward transmission. "Using criminal law leads to a situation where people feel even more stigmatized and where it is very likely that they are not going to be very open about their status," explained Stegling. "And ultimately it may lead to the fact that people feel that it is better not to know their status because they may be criminally liable if they do and therefore they won"t go and test for HIV at all." And, she says, criminal laws target certain communities disproportionately, especially women who will be tested during a pregnancy. She highlights the case of pop star Benaissa. "I think it"s a very typical situation because she was a young woman at the time that she learned about her HIV status," Stegling noted. "She learned about it because she was pregnant. She went to an anti-natal care facility and she decided not to disclose her status because she was scared of the stigma that is attached to it and she was particularly scared about the stigma that would be related to her child." She says many people fear exposing their HIV-status because of the stigma that surrounds the virus. She says this is especially so in Africa, where people fear being excluded from their family or community or losing their access to property. The Global Criminalization Scan collects information on laws criminalizing the transmission of or exposure to HIV transmission. According to its data, at least 600 people globally have been convicted on HIV exposure or transmission charges. Half of those were in the United States. It is in the U.S., Canada, and Europe where the most convictions have taken place. But the scan also shows that criminalization laws are spreading, especially in Africa. Moono Nyambe is part of the Global Network of People Living with HIV and has worked on the scan. She says some of the laws emerging in Africa are rigorous. "Probably the thing that has been noted about some of the laws applied in Africa is the broadness of the provisions within those laws. Some of the laws make it possible for a woman to be prosecuted for transmitting HIV to her child," noted Nyambe. But she says the laws in Africa are rarely used, the scan has documented only 10 convictions across the continent.

Life is a Cabaret at Entertainer Boot Camp
Students gather at Yale University to learn the art of performing in nightclubs
Jeff Lunden

New Haven, Connecticut
17 August 2010

Instructor Tovah Feldshuh with student Nancy Gair at the International Cabaret Conference held at Yale University.
The word "cabaret" evokes so many images — singers dressed in sequins and satin, presiding over elegant nightclubs or dark, intimate rooms, cover charges and two-drink minimums.
What is doesn"t bring to mind is college dormitories, dining halls and 9 a.m. classes. But for the past eight summers, aspiring singers have come to New Haven, Connecticut, to attend a sort of cabaret boot camp: the International Cabaret Conference at Yale University. Intimate connection
New York City club owner Erv Raible has been the conference"s executive and artistic director for the past 30 years. He says cabaret is a deeply emotional medium for a singer. "The intimacy of it, I think, is the most important part. The fact that, unlike any other genre in the entertainment world, you actually go into a room where you go out of there feeling like you know the person. You know something about them. They have touched your heart." Learning how to effectively touch the heart may be the central goal of the conference but the 38 students also take classes in repertoire, hair, make-up, clothing, sound, lighting and marketing. Their ages range from 16 to 66, and they come from all over the United States and around the globe.
A second — or third — career Oklahoma-born Harold Sanditen began his professional life as an investment banker.
"Then I became a theater producer for 20 years in London and I gave that up three years ago to start singing, which is what I wanted to do in the very first place, but I never had the confidence." At Yale, Sanditen and his fellow classmates have the opportunity to spend nine days working with some of the best music directors and cabaret artists in the business. That includes Laurel Massé, an original member of Manhattan Transfer, and Tony Award-winning actress Faith Prince. At the first performance session, Sanditen performs his unique take on a Beatles song. Prince likes it, but sees room for improvement. "I need you to not close your eyes," she tells him. "I feel like you"re closing your eyes on the most important contact." He nods, and tries again. His classmate, Lindsay Sutherland Boal, trained in opera but the Vancouver-based singer recalls she changed her mind, right in the middle of an audition.
Over the course of a week of 14-hour days, the teachers work hard to rid Boal of some of her operatic habits — including a tendency to be overly theatrical. Singing as story-telling Boal learned some surprising lessons at the conference. "It"s not important, frankly, to be a singer, to be a cabaret artist. It"s all about storytelling and while I, of course, I knew that before, I understand that at a much deeper level now."
Sanditen has learned there are different ways of storytelling, too. "Songs you think are really serious, you can find comedy in them — you can turn them. You can make something that nobody has ever sung as anything but a serious ballad, you can make it into a comic tour de force." He demonstrates by turning the soul classic, "Me and Mrs. Jones" — about an extramarital affair between a man and his lover, Mrs. Jones — into a modern, gender-bending ballad involving Mr. Jones, as well. On the last night of the conference, all the students have three minutes to show what they"ve learned in front of a paying audience. The concert is called "Cabaret Stars of Tomorrow." Boal performs in a striking red bustier, but with a newfound stillness. Afterwards, teacher Prince is speechless. "I think they did incredibly, deliciously wonderful."
And who knows? Maybe some of them will be the cabaret stars of tomorrow.

Reiner Takes Nostalgic Look at Teen Love in "Flipped"
Alan Silverman
|
Hollywood
09 August 2010

Photo: Ben Glass
CALLAN McAULIFFE as Bryce Loski and MADELINE CARROLL as Juli Baker in Castle Rock Entertainment’s coming-of-age romantic comedy “FLIPPED,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.
Boy meets girl and they fall in love. It"s a plot that Hollywood loves to revisit, but the new film by director Rob Reiner takes a nostalgic journey back to the pangs, pains and joys of first love. Here"s a look at the coming-of-age comedy Flipped.
"Julie Baker? You hate her." "That"s what"s so weird. I don"t think I do. I can"t stop thinking about her." "You"ve got it bad, man." It has finally dawned on teenager Bryce Loski that he really cares for the girl who has lived across the street for most of his young life. Of course, he should have realized there was something special when they first met - as seven-year-olds - the day his family moved in to the neighborhood. "I couldn"t believe it. There I was holding hands with this strange girl. How did I get into this mess?" From Julie"s point of view, that moment changed her life. "The first day I met Bryce Loski I flipped. It was those eyes …something in those dazzling eyes."
As the kids grow up to become teens, Flipped flips back and forth, showing key moments in their relationship from both points of view. It"s a device director and co-writer Rob Reiner takes directly from the popular novel by Wendelin Van Draanen that he adapted for the screenplay. "I read it with my son (Nick) who was 11 years old …in the fifth grade when he was assigned it by his teachers," Reiner explains. " We read it together and that"s when I first became of aware of it. I was completely knocked out by how insightful the writing was. It was clearly written not just for kids but for adults. I got as much, probably more, out of it than even Nick did because I could look back and think about those first feelings that I had. Nick said to me "Dad, I think this could be a great movie," and I thought he was absolutely right."
Reiner makes one significant change, moving the story from the book"s 1980"s setting to the more innocent 1960"s. It"s the same era in which he put his 1986 hit Stand By Me and Reiner sees Flipped as an ideal companion piece to that nostalgic look at friendships. "Stand By Me is about those first very powerful feelings of love and connection with your buddies and this is about those first powerful, confusing feelings of falling in love, so it"s a boy-girl story," explains Reiner. "That"s kind of why I set it back in that period …a couple of reasons. One is that"s when I was 12 going on 13, in the late "50"s and early "60"s, but also because I wanted to focus just on those feelings which, to me, are timeless and universal. Nowadays with texting and Facebook and all of that stuff, it kind of clouds a lot of those feelings that are going on between kids; but they are the same. They are the same now as they were when I was a kid and I wanted to kind of strip all that away, make it very pure and focus on just what they are going through."
The emotions may be timeless, but the 1963 setting puts the story in a narrow window of apparent innocence when the tensions of the Cuban missile crisis had gone and Americans were not yet shattered by President Kennedy"s assassination. On the horizon were the civil rights movement, the rise of feminism and the Vietnam War. Rebecca DeMornay, who plays the teenage boy"s mother, says the Loski family …and her character in particular …struggle with the changing times. "The character was a very, very repressed woman who really was trying to keep a perfect façade together and convince herself that everything was good if she just looked good and the house looked good and her children"s grades were good and the car looked good," Demornay says. "Everyone in the movie learns something and she learns that it really wasn"t actually all worth it."
Australian newcomer Callan McAuliffe, 15, co-stars as love-struck Bryce; the object of his unexpected affections, Julie, is played by 14-year-old Madeline Carroll, who thinks today"s teens will "get it". "I think it will be cool for them to be able to see how it was back then," Carroll says. "Kids are so obnoxious nowadays. I really didn"t realize until I read this script …and it wasn"t just a script; people actually lived in those days. They were so much nicer and pleasant to be around. I think it will be cool for them to watch, just to see how it was back then." "I went to bed that night thinking of the kiss that might have been. I mean it was clear he had feelings for me, but he was just too shy to show them. My mother said boys were like that." Flipped was filmed in a tree-lined suburban neighborhood of Ann Arbor, Michigan. The cast includes Penelope Ann Miller and Aidan Quinn as Julie"s struggling parents; Anthony Edwards is Bryce"s conservative father at odds with John Mahoney as the widowed grandfather who has moved in with the family. Director Rob Reiner weaves popular music of the time throughout Flipped, as he did almost 25 years ago in Stand By Me.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has had to cancel last-minute promotions of his production Peepli Live as he is down with fever.
"Am feeling very helpless lying in bed a few days before the release. All the last lap interviews and promotions are cancelled :-( doomed (sic)," Aamir wrote on his Facebook page today.
Peepli Live, a satire on the farmers' suicides and the subsequent media and political response, releases on August 13.
The 44-year-old actor, who returned from Melbourne on Saturday morning, was running a 103 degree temperature and had to cancel his scheduled live chat on Facebook as he had no strength to travel to the venue. "Guys I am most disappointed, I am down with very heavy fever, 103. Returned from Melbourne this morning with fever and was in bed all day to try and recover before tonight. But I have been hit hard this time. Won't be able to make it for the chat especially as I have to travel to Chembur for it," he wrote in an earlier post. The actor has also expressed concern for the flood-hit Druk Pema School in Leh where the last few scenes of his blockbuster movie 3 Idiots were shot. 15 km from Leh town on the Leh-Manali highway, the school was virtually washed away after two cloudbursts led to flash floods in the region on Friday. "Very shocked and distressed to hear about the school we shot in Leh for 3i. Trying to get in touch with the Principal. I suppose the communications are down too," wrote Aamir.

It seems that Sonam Kapoor as the matchmaker in Aisha has managed to impress the moviegoers. The romantic comedy has garnered Rs.260 million at the opening weekend worldwide.
Inspired by Jane Austen's novel Emma, the film was released on 475 screens across India and 135 screens overseas on Friday.
"By such overwhelming weekend collections, the film has set a new benchmark for films with female protagonists. The box office collections are very encouraging," Kamal Gianchandani, President, PVR Pictures said in an interview.
Produced by debutante Rhea Kapoor, under the banner of her father's Anil Kapoor Films Company, Aisha has been has directed by first timer Rajshree Ojha and distributed by PVR Pictures.
The movie is a modern-day adaptation of Austen's 19th century British novel. It stars Sonam as a Delhi-based free-spirited, stylish and spoilt high society girl, who feels she is naturally gifted in finding love matches. She is supported by actors like Abhay Deol, Arunoday Singh, Cyrus Sahukar, Ira Dubey and debutantes Lisa Haydon and Amrita Puri in the film.
"The film is doing well in the big cities and the business is quite encouraging in smaller cities as well," informed Gianchandani.
"Also as compared to Friday, Monday has only seen a drop of 20 percent, which is quite minimal. Usually a film sees a drop of anywhere more than 40 percent on a Monday," he added.

After dropping his Slicktionary, Atlanta CTE member looks toward the future with Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Slick Pulla Photo: Black Bill Gates This Week"s Main Pick Street King: Slick Pulla Holding It Down For: CTE/USDA Mixtape: Slicktionary Real Spit: Welcome home to CTE"s own Slick Pulla. The USDA member came home in early January after spending two and half years in jail. He did three months of work release and three months of house arrest with a leg monitor. Now, he can now move more freely for the remainder of his four-year parole. The leg monitor is off and he"s ready to start touring. "It wasn"t no problems with the law," Slick said in his Atlanta studio. "It was a possession of firearms bid due to certain circumstances. Due to a certain lifestyle, you feel that"s how you got to move. Unfortunately, I already had an "F" on my report card. That"s not how the powers that be felt. I sat down. ... When you go in jail, you can do two things: You can come out dumber and go back; or come out smarter and go harder for your family and loved ones. That"s pretty much the gist on that." Obviously, Pulla is doing the latter. He just recently released his first post-prison work, a mixtape called Slicktionary, hosted by the Black Bill Gates, and is already well into recording the follow-up. Besides his music, Slick has maintained a relatively low profile — that is, except for the reports that his crew and Waka Flocka"s entourage got into a scuffle at ATL clothing epicenter Walters in March. The altercation led to gunshots, but no one was arrested. Pulla refutes talk of his involvement. "Slick"s name was in some sh--. That"s all that was," he said. As for the "Hard in Da Paint" rapper, Pulla says the only thing on his radar right now is money. "At this present time, I"m focused on the greenbacks, the frog skin," he said. "I got tunnel vision. I"m in a zone right now. I"m looking straight ahead. All that stuff on the left and right side, I"m not even worried about it." Slick is looking into acting and the GA OG also just launched "Slick Prints," his own brand of T-shirts. Joints to Check For: "Black Ice (The Preface)." "The reason I chose the beat is because how I do the music — I don"t know how anybody else does the music — it takes me back to a certain time in my life," Pulla said. "When [Goodie Mob"s] Still Standing CD came out, I wasn"t even in the music then. I was a fan of the music. Goodie Mob, the whole Dungeon family, they set the blueprint for a lot of what"s going on today. That beat right there ["Black Ice (Sky High)"], it brought all them times back." "Hood Rich Freestyle." "I did the Eminem track ["Lose Yourself"] "cause one day I was in the halfway house and I seen the video," Slick recalled. "It was on "106 and Park" for the "Throwback of the Day." How the beat climaxed! My homeboy was like, "You need to snatch that up." " "On Da Radar." "That"s just a street anthem," he explained. "If you a hustler or about your money or whatever you do for a sack, you can relate to it. The hook goes "I love money/ Broke ain"t on my radar." I love money, I"m trying to get it up." NEW YORK — MTV just got a little bit fresher. Gabi Gregg, who goes by @gabifresh on Twitter, was crowned MTV"s first-ever Twitter Jockey at the live finale of "Follow Me: The Search for the First MTV TJ" on Sunday night (August 8).
The 24-year-old Detroit native and plus-size-fashion blogger was one of 20 contestants chosen by MTV, in partnership with ZYNC from American Express, to compete for a $100,000 contract to be the social-media face of MTV.
Throughout the first round of challenges, Gabi"s eye for style and gregarious charm catapulted her to more than 5,000 Twitter followers and nabbed her the highest number of votes on the ZYNC by American Express Facebook hub.
Only five of the original contestants made it to the live finale in New York City, and Gabi, rocking a little black dress on the sparkly stage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, continued her winning streak to top the popular vote during every elimination round. Moments after it was revealed that Gabi nabbed the throne, the @MTVTJ account was transferred to her possession, and she tweeted her first official message: "Ommmmmgggggg thAnk you to everyone."
Gabi spoke to MTV News only moments after sending off her first dispatch, and she told us all about why she"s excited about the position — including the fact that it"s her first job since she graduated from college two years ago. She has big plans for the historic new position, and she"s keeping it all about the followers.
"My main goal is to really connect with the audience," she said. "I don"t want to be the same as the MTV Twitter; I want to keep it personable and keep in touch with the followers. I want to give them a voice."
Her first order of business? "Paying off my student loans," she says. We can"t wait to see what her second is — and what she"ll wear during all of them.
Are you happy Gabi is the new TJ? Let us know in the comments!

Nicki Minaj"s "Your Love" has been a breakout summer smash, so, music fans are familiar with the line "For your lovin", I"mma Die Hard like Bruce Willis." Since the song has topped the charts, it was only a matter of time before Willis got wind of the shout-out.
"I can"t get enough songs on the radio that have my name in it," Willis told MTV News in July. "It"s always an honor. I love that song. I don"t understand it, but I can understand my name."
It turns out Minaj isn"t an MC who name-checks "em and leaves "em. The hip-hop diva told MTV News at the Teen Choice Awards that she was geeked that Willis is into the record.
"I saw the [MTV] footage when he was like, "Yeah, I don"t know what she"s saying in it, but I can recognize my name." I was like "Yes!" " the Young Money diva exclaimed. Apparently, the femcee has been a die-hard Willis fan for a while. "It was so funny, because I had the biggest crush on Bruce Willis when I was little," the MC confided.
Getting the attention of her girlhood crush is just one of the surprises Minaj has experienced lately. The MC just scored her first MTV Video Music Awards nomination for Best New Artist and admitted that she was blindsided by the news.
"Someone sent me an e-mail saying congratulations and I was like, "For what?" And they said, "For the VMA." And I was like, "What was I nominated for?" And when they said, "Best New Artist," I just started screaming," Minaj said. "I definitely thought I"d get one someday, but not before I put the album out. I never thought I"d get a nomination [this year]. ... I didn"t even think I"d get invited!"
Do you think Nicki Minaj will take home a Moonman at this year"s VMAs? Let us know in the comments below!
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.
